The blue giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth on September 11th. Its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long high above the southern horizon. This is the best time to view and photograph Neptune.
Facts About Neptune:
- It orbits the sun at a distance of four and a half billion kilometers! For one orbit, i.e. one Neptune year, it takes incredible 165 Earth years!
- Neptune, like the other gas planets, consists mainly of hydrogen and helium and some methane. Methane gives it the nice blue coloring. Inside it has a solid iron core the size of the earth.
- Today Neptune is the outermost planet of the solar system and one of the coldest places in our solar system. Its outside temperature is about -200° Celsius.
